Swallow the Sun Band

Swallow the Sun band, founded in 2000 in Jyväskylä, Finland by guitarist Juha Raivio, has defined melodic death‑doom with atmospheric intensity and a haunting melodic sensibility. Their blend of crushing riffs, gothic undertones, and expansive soundscapes has set them apart in the global extreme metal scene.

Vocals are handled by Mikko Kotamäki (since 2001), whose anguished delivery perfectly complements the band’s thematic focus on nature, loss, and melancholy. Completing the current lineup are Matti Honkonen (bass), Juuso Raatikainen (drums since 2013), and Juho Räihä (guitar since 2018).

Their 2003 debut, The Morning Never Came, released via Firebox Records, introduced their signature sound—melodic doom woven with death-metal weight—which garnered critical acclaim and regional success.

The 2005 follow-up, Ghosts of Loss, expanded this sound with gothic elements and emotional gravitas. Its haunting tracks and atmospheric depth elevated the band’s artistic reach.

Hope (2007), their third album under Spinefarm, continued their rise, charting highly in Finland and reinforcing their reputation as melodic death‑doom’s leading innovators.

Emerald Forest and the Blackbird (2012) embraced progressive elements, cinematic layering, and guest vocals (Anette Olzon), illustrating their continuous evolution.

Following ambitious projects including the triple album Songs from the North I, II & III (2015) and When a Shadow Is Forced into the Light (2019), which channeled personal loss into a more melodic direction, the Swallow the Sun band sustained artistic momentum.

Moonflowers (2021) showcased dramatic instrumentation—violin, cello, additional keys—and delved deeper into atmospheric textures, while the 2024 release Shining, produced by Dan Lancaster, took a more progressive, “Black‑Album” approach to doom-metal.

Their tours span North America and Europe, including a 2025 North American run with Harakiri for the Sky and Ghost Bath, further solidifying their global presence

Through over two decades and nine studio albums, Swallow the Sun band remains at the forefront of death‑doom, blending atmosphere, melody, and crushing heft into a distinct and evolving sound that continues to influence the genre worldwide.
