Slap of Reality Melodic Hardcore Band

Tampa Punk Pioneers
Slap of Reality melodic hardcore band, formed in Tampa, Florida, in 1987, pioneered a melodic hardcore sound that blended California and Northeast punk influences. They grew into trailblazers, mixing aggression with melody and shaping underground punk through the early ’90s.
The original lineup—Frank Lacatena (vocals), Joe Kiser (guitar), Dave Peralta (guitar), Gregg Moore (bass), and Rob Sexton (drums)—released a demo in 1988 and followed up with four 7″ EPs and two full-length LPs by 1996. Their evolution brought comparisons to Dag Nasty, Samiam, Seaweed, and 7 Seconds.
Their 1990 EP Time Alone on Pazzafist Records (Kevin Seconds of 7 Seconds) helped propel their career. Soon after, they signed with Cargo/Headhunter Records and released their debut LP 3 Lefts Make A Right in 1991.
They briefly entered the major-label sphere via Elektra Networks/SKENE! partnership in 1992. Their LP Monkeydust was released only in Europe through Runt Records after the split, before the band dissolved in 1992.
Slap of Reality reunited in 1995, signed with Skene! Records, then relocated briefly to New York. They released Monkeydust internationally and brought new energy through the Drowned Out EP in 1995 before splitting again in 1996.
After a long hiatus, they re-emerged post-2018, signing to Florida’s A Jam Records. The new era brought singles “Never Far” (2018) and “A Part Of” (2019), followed by a trio of songs on the Gaslight EP in 2019.
Most recently, Slap of Reality released Goodbye, Me in August 2023—their first full-length in decades. Bandcamp notes highlight the release's return to melodic hardcore roots and emotional depth.
The current lineup retains original members Lacatena, Kiser, Moore, Peralta, and Sexton, delivering sets that blend nostalgic hits with new songs—showing both legacy and vitality.
Live appearances now include reunions and punk festivals across the U.S., affirming their impact on audiences who remember their early influence and those discovering them anew.
With decades of history spanning early ‘90s underground credibility, mid-’90s resurgence, and a full return in 2023, the Slap of Reality melodic hardcore band continues to solidify their legacy in Floridian punk history.
