Surf Punk Icons Taking Over Pensacola’s Handlebar

Agent Orange, formed in 1979 in Placentia, California, is the surf punk band renowned for fusing punk energy with classic surf guitar. They're widely credited with pioneering skate punk and surf punk, a sound that still resonates today. As they prepare to perform at Pensacola’s Handlebar, their influence on local live music is unmistakable.

The original trio Mike Palm (guitar/vocals), Steve Soto (bass), and Scott Miller (drums) crafted a distinctive, reverb-laden punk sound that set them apart. Palm remains the band’s driving force, preserving their signature surf-infused punk for over four decades.

In 1980, the Bloodstains EP cemented their reputation, with the title track gaining airplay on KROQ-FM and inclusion on the influential Rodney on the ROQ compilation . This momentum led to wider exposure and established them as key players in the punk scene.

Their debut LP, Living in Darkness (1981), released by Posh Boy Records, remains a landmark in surf punk band history. Featuring gritty punk riffs layered with surf melodies, it's frequently cited as a cornerstone of skate punk culture.

When bassist Steve Soto exited, James Levesque joined, and the band released This Is the Voice in 1986 via Enigma Records. This album matured the band’s sound while retaining the surf-punk essence that made them famous

Despite lineup shifts in the late ’80s and ’90s including Brent Liles, Derek O’Brien, Sam Bolle, and Charlie Quintana the group stayed active on the touring scene. Their 1996 album, Virtually Indestructible, kept their high-octane surf punk alive.

Though not prolific in later decades, Agent Orange hasn’t slowed down onstage. With bassist Perry Giordano (since 2006) and drummer Sandy Hansen (since 2019), Palm’s trio continues to energize live audiences
