Throughout their early years, the band experienced numerous lineup changes. Vocalist John Joseph left to pursue life in Puerto Rico and Hawaii, leading to several replacements. The band's first live performance under the name Disco Smoothy took place in 1981, but they quickly adopted the name Cro-Mags. Despite their rocky start, they began to develop their signature style, characterized by heavy riffs and aggressive lyrics.
The Cro-Mags gained significant traction in the mid-1980s, releasing their debut album, The Age of Quarrel, in 1986. This album, primarily written by Mayhew and Flanagan, is often hailed as a classic in the hardcore genre. The band's sound evolved with their subsequent albums, such as Best Wishes (1989) and Alpha Omega (1992), showcasing a heavier metal influence.
However, internal conflicts led to Joseph's departure after The Age of Quarrel, leaving Flanagan to take on vocal duties for the second album. Tensions continued to rise within the band, culminating in a breakup in the late 1990s. Despite sporadic reunions and tours, the band struggled to maintain stability.
